Can't Believe I Spent....

January 29th, 2007 at 04:55 pm

I spent $200 on tickets to go to 2 Red Sox games in September! And to make matters worse, I charged them on my cc that already has $3400. Luckily though there's no interest on it until November. Still that just puts me $200 more in debt. Well maybe a $100 more as I'm splitting this with a friend of mine. Just clicking the "Place Your Order" button on the net makes it so easy to get whatever I want. This is a bad thing!

I feel like I am out of control, to some extent, of my financial situation. I can and should be in complete control of my financial situation. I'm a bit of a control freak and it irks me that I'm having trouble with this area of my life. I'm not horribly in debt right now but I guesstimate that I'm somewhere in the vicinity of $4000. I've never owed that much money even when I was paying for some post graduate college schooling and I was making less than I am now.

I have to gain control again! I'm not by any means broke even though I feel like I sometimes am. $30 here and $30 there for dinner and/or drinks adds up. Even though I'm struggling a bit with the debt, I am at least saving some money and maxing out my Roth IRA. I do have excellent credit. I don't believe my spending is completely out of control, I just need to fine tune it some.

Back from Vacation

January 24th, 2007 at 04:57 pm

Got back from Colorado late Sunday night. Trying to get home was a nightmare with the snow and all. Well I did come home with $40 of the $100 I took on the trip. So all in all, my vacation only cost me $260 for 4 days. I decided not to go anywhere next month for the long President's Day weekend because I CAN NOT AFFORD IT! Ouch it hurts to say that but its true. I have other places I want to go and need to save for that.

I just booked a cruise to Mexico yesterday. I put down a $100 deposit, which I didn't put on a credit card. I have until the middle of May to pay the remaining $304.79 balance. I know that I will of course have to take spending money but the cruise isn't until July. Since the new law went into effect just yesterday, I'll now have to go get a passport.

Just found out tickets for Red Sox games go on sale this Saturday so I'm going to buy tickets to see them play the LA Angels in Boston in September. I'm a huge Red Sox fan and am crazy to fly 3,000 miles for a baseball game. I will be paying for these tickets with some extra money I got so at least I won't incur any more cc charges there. Boston won't be cheap but if I start saving some money now and when I book my trip in July I should have enough to pay for it in full.

Vacations

Okay so I'm getting ready to go to Colorado on Thursday for the weekend to visit a friend. I got my plane ticket for $198 to fly from Orange County, CA to Denver, CO. I got it so cheap because I have to change planes in Phoenix. I am staying with a friend so I don't have to worry about paying for a hotel room or a rental car. I plan on bringing about $100 for the weekend.

The thing is that I love to travel and since I only have a certain amount of PTO I'm always taking little trips for the weekend. My dilema is that I usually charge my plane ticket on my cc when I already carrying a balance. I had all my cc's paid off last July and then I found my old roommate was getting married in Seattle so I wanted to go up there for that. Plane ticket and hotel was $400 and then I had to get a rental car and that was $150 and then I had to eat of course. All in all it wasn't a cheap 2 day trip but I'm glad I still went.

Well my next trip 2 weeks after Seattle was Boston for my b-day. And that definitely wasn't cheap! I had a friend go with me but I still spent about $1600. I had a grand time but again I charged that on my credit card.

I have alot of places I'd like to go this year and I'd love to be able to NOT charge everything on my credit card. My goal is go get out of the small amount of debt I have not add to it. I know I know, I've got to stop using my cc. I want to go to Vegas next month but hotels are just so expensive so I think I'm going to nix that idea.

I just found out my cousin is getting married in North Carolina in May and I have to go to that as I haven't seen my dad's side of the family for over 10 years. I also want to go to New Mexico sometime in the spring or summer to visit another cousin. I'm planning on going on a cruise to Mexico in July and I want to go back to Boston in September for my b-day. In between all this I would like to be able to hit Vegas and maybe San Francisco and of course Colorado again.

I know I need to set money aside for my "travel" habit but it's hard to do so when I'm saving for retirement and my "Denver Dash" fund, and pay towards my cc's, and pay all my other expenses. While it's not impossible to start setting aside for my "travel" habit, it's hard. One area I can definitely see cutting way back is going out to eat and going out to the bars. I bring my lunch my days to work but it's the weekends that get me cause I like to go out. I don't have any problem dropping $50 a weekend on that. Such a waste of money for eating out and drinks...

First Entry

Wow I can't believe that 2007 is already here. I have lots of financials goals I would like to achieve by the end of the year so they say that the best way to accomplish those goals is to put them in writing.

My financial situation is good but I want to make it even better. I currently have somewhere in the vicinity of $3,500 give or take in cc debt. Now $3200 of that is on a 0% interest card until November.

My number 1 goal is to pay that off before the 0% interest expires. I plan on using ALL of my tax return to put towards that card. I got $1900 last year so if I can get somewhere around that back from Uncle Sam, then that would eliminate about half of the debt.

I recently purchased a new car late last year. I did alot of research and played with numbers. My car payment is only $380 which is something I can afford. I plan on keeping my car for 10 years.

Every month I put $333.33 in my Roth IRA so that I can max it out. I started my Roth in July 2005 with only $100 a month going into it but I upped those contributions over time. That was one thing that was important to me to do. I know so many people who aren't saving for retirement.

I also save an additional $150 or so in a savings account. I call it my "Denver Dash". I currently reside in Orange County, CA and this is not the place I want to live in time to come. I don't know if I can but I would like to move to Colorado maybe at the end of this year or definitely sometime in 2008. I want to up my contributions on this fund.

Another thing I need to do is get an emergency fund going even if it's $20 a week. Something is better than nothing.

I make enough to pay all my bills, save some of course, and do things that I want to do but I think I can save more money if I take an even closer look at my finances. So my goal for the next month is to write down EVERY penny I spend and see what I'm wasting money on and what I can do to eliminate or at least reduce that.
